Interior Moisture - Masonic Temple, Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Background
Ken Wiggers of Prairie Foam Insulators was hired to fix a problem that had been plaguing the Masonic Temple in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Challenge
The exterior masonry walls in the attic were being destroyed by the freeze/thawing cycles of condensate that formed on the inside of the walls. The inside surfaces of the brick and turned to handfuls of red powder. Condensate also ran down the walls of the room below creating damage.
Solution/Results
The recommendation of Prairie Foam Insulators was to address the root cause of the problem, i.e., condensation created by the contact of relatively warm moist air in the attic coming into contact with the inner surfaces of the masonry wall. Icynene® was sprayed against the inside surface of the masonry to create a thermal break between the warm moist attic air and the cold inside surface of the brick wall. Some exterior wall areas of the sloped shed attic were accessible from the attic. The inside of the exterior walls in the very shallow attic areas could be sprayed thought half inch holes - the 100-fold expansion of Icynene® provided assurance that the wall areas were covered with foam.

The air sealing capabilities of Icynene keep the warm moist air away from the cold
m asonry - no more spalling of the masonry.
