The Challenge. EarthCraft House™, a program of the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association and Southface Energy Institute, assists builders and remodelers to construct healthy, comfortable, affordable homes that cut energy bills while utilizing sustainable building products. Following EarthCraft House™ Guidelines, a 1950's era ranch was converted into a two-story residence to increase the living space from 3,338 sq. ft. to 4,921 sq. ft. The objective was to insulate the home with Icynene® insulation an air barrier material to deliver healthy, cost-effective benefits, while still preserving the home's original architectural details.

The Results. Icynene minimized air leakage to reduce the amount of air changes per hour in order to decrease heating and cooling loads on the HVAC system. Icynene helped reduce the air infiltration rate to meet the EarthCraft recommendation of 1/3 air changes per hour (ACH). This allowed the home to maintain a constant, comfortable temperature using less energy, despite increased living space. The remodeled home also exceeded the qualifications for the Energy Star® label by achieving a HERS rating of 87 – 10 points above the home's original HERS rating before renovation (HERS 77).
