New MLS and MRIS Energy Efficiency Scores

The MLS (Multiple Listings Service) has begun to make a special Home Energy Rating Score (HERS) available on home listings in more and more states in the U.S. That means that potential buyers can see how energy efficient a home is before ever stepping foot inside.  The lower the rating, the lower the energy costs of the home. The states that include a HERS score in their MLS listings are as follows:

  1. Colorado
  2. Florida
  3. Illinois
  4. Maine
  5. Minnesota
  6. Nebraska
  7. New Hampshire
  8. Vermont
  9. Virginia
  10. Washington

In addition, the Mid-Atlantic MLS, known as MRIS, has recently decided to include several energy performance ratings, including HERS scores. That means this industry leading website will make HERS ratings available in Maryland, Virginia and Washington D.C., as well as parts of Delaware, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.

How can you, as the homeowner looking to sell, help to improve that score? One way is to upgrade your home insulation to spray foam insulation like Icynene. When foam insulation is installed in appropriate areas throughout the house, it can help to reduce air leaks, improve energy efficiency and help create a more comfortable environment. Air leaks can cause unwanted drafts in homes, which can lead to a higher use of heating and cooling systems to maintain a comfortable interior temperature. This can then lead to higher heating and cooling bills, all of which can potentially contribute to a poorer HERS score on a home.

Talk to a licensed Icynene spray foam insulation contractor in your area, to find out more about your home’s current HERS score, and how you can improve your rating.
