No Air Seal - Thawing Shed, Tonawanda Coke, New York
| Background The company featured in this project purchases coal from Virginia and has it shipped to its New York State factory all year in railroad cars. The production of coke requires a constant supply of coal around the clock, as the ovens/furnaces cannot be shut down. In the winter, coal arriving from Virginia is completely frozen into a solid mass within the railroad cars. 20 rail cars are moved into a thawing shed at one time and natural gas jets were ignited and left running for 12 hours. The thawing shed had no insulation and a substantial amount of heat was lost through the building's roof. In an effort to reduce natural gas expenses relating to the thawing shed, the company wanted to insulate the structure. Situation Insulating with fibrous material would be difficult, expensive and time consuming. In addition, it would not provide the air seal needed to keep in the warm air. The surface of the roof was dirty and the company preferred not to incur the expense of cleaning. |
| Solution/Results Icynene® was applied by Williamstown Construction directly to the underside of the roof. The customer was so pleased with the results that they used Williamstown Construction to install Icynene® in other areas of the factory. | |
