 | Background The Whale Cove, Chesterfield Inlet and Kugaruuk communities are located near the Arctic Circle in the Nunavut Territory of Northern Canada. Access to the communities is by air or one annual barge to each community. Temperatures in these areas are normally sub-zero for more than 10 months of the year in one of the harshest climates in the world. The cost of heating and operating the Northern Community Offices is extremely high due to freight costs associated with supplying the fuel. Supplementary heating with wood is not an option due to a lack of trees on the Arctic Tundra. The architect firm in charge of the project was introduced to the benefits of Icynene® by the Icynene Licensed Dealer in that region. The firm proposed an upgrade to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) for the installation of Icynene® in four offices. Following further discussions between the Icynene Dealer and the architect firm, Icynene® was specified for the use in the entire building envelope. The walls would be R20, and the roof, and floor at R40. There were other 1/2 pound and 2 pound foam insulation dealers that submitted proposals . With Icynene's properties and its Limited Lifetime Warranty, Icynene® stood out among the competition. It was found that no other product could be installed at extremely low temperatures (for example, at -40 degrees if necessary), be a healthy product with no HCFCs, retain its installed R-Value and still offer an unbeatable warranty. |

Another office was installed with fiberglass batts to give a performance and cost comparison. Interestingly, the cost for the fiberglass batt insulation was almost identical to that of Icynene® due to the high cost of shipping. The installations of Icynene® in all the offices proved that the Healthier, Quieter, More Energy® efficient insulation would once again exceed all expecations; all tested samples met product specifications. The initial reaction from the RCMP was extremely positive and Icynene® has since been specified in other RCMP buildings. | |
