National Southwire Aluminum Company, Hawesville, KY

Background
The National Southwire Aluminum Company, (NSA), is a division of Southwire Company of Carrollton, Georgia. The 1,100 acre facility is an alumina ore refining operation which produces aluminum ingots for further processing by other Southwire facilities. The facility consists of the large main refining facility, four disposal ponds, and a refractory brick disposal area.

A condensation problem developed along the underside of the roofline of the warehouse area. When the condensation dripped on the aluminum coils of wire, it caused water spots (calcium deposits) to form. Shipments from Southwire were being refused because of this seemingly uncontrollable condensation problem.

Three years before, Icynene was applied to the roofline of an exercise room within the factory. They were very pleased with that application and thought that Icynene could, once again, solve a major condensation issue.

Solutions/Results
A quality assurance representative from Southwire contacted the local Icynene Licensed Dealer. The Dealer sprayed the underside of the warehouse roofline. After the Icynene® application, Southwire noted that there were no condensation problems in the warehouse. In addition, much to company's delight, no shipments have been returned to Southwire.
