Frozen Sprinkler - Wesley Acres Retirement Center, Des Moines, Iowa

Background
Ken Wiggers of Prairie Foam Insulators in Huxley, Iowa sprayed Wesley Acres Retirement Home in Des Moines, Iowa to prevent the sprinkler system from freezing.

Problem
Jerry Fuller, General Superintendent of Venter Spooner Inc. in Johnston, Iowa called the second week of December 2001 about the cold-related problems in the 1.5 year old vestibule entry addition of the Wesley Acres Retirement Home. The reception desk area was only 50 degrees F and the sprinkler system was frozen.

Solution/Results
The fiberglass batts were removed from the roof underside of the peaked roof vestibule entryway. Icynene® was sprayed onto the roof underside. The troublesome area consisted of only about 420 square feet -- small, but created a lot of grief.
