While the season suffers through an identity crisis, slipping between springtime and arctic vortexes from day to day, the good news is that interior temperatures don’t have to budge. Icynene, the Canadian-based spray foam insulation manufacturer, recently unveiled Icynene ProSeal, a new generation of spray foam insulation product with an amped R-value of R7 per inch*, one of the highest available, suitable for cold weather applications as low as 23 degrees Fahrenheit.

Icynene achieved this distinction through the product’s high level of elasticity, a quality that leaves traditional forms of insulation behind. “Its backbone is a conventional polyurethane, the kind that you would find in your memory foam mattress,” explains Icynene Vice President of Engineering Paul Duffy. “The flexible structure adjusts and moves with the building as it expands and contracts, and it’s sprayed in place. The material actually adheres to the surfaces it’s sprayed.”

With an ease of application inherent to spray foam insulation, it can go almost anywhere, filling any design (even the most unconventional, like this building sculpted to look like a stack of books in Santa Barbara, California) in most climates with a continuous barrier throughout the wall cavity. Icynene has been tested and accepted in types I to V construction to provide full barrier protection, even under the roof deck of an attic, around duct work, structural frames, and any potential leakage sites. Satisfying new building codes implemented in 2012, it’s extremely moisture-resistant, water beading on the surface before sliding off.

All of this energy efficiency inevitably leads to monetary savings. The insulation can amount to as much as a 50 percent^ reduction in the client’s heating and cooling bills, paying for itself within three to four years and continuing to perform throughout the life of the building. Unsurprisingly, Icynene qualifies for LEED credits in several categories, from Energy and Atmosphere to Innovation and Design. It also qualifies for Indoor Environmental quality, as the barrier keeps out more than just air. In addition, it helps block allergens penetrating the building envelope and its light-density variation can substantially dampen noise. It truly operates in extremes so that your home doesn’t have to.

* R means resistance to heat flow. The higher the R-value, the greater the insulating power. Compare insulation R-values before you buy. There are other factors to consider. The amount of insulation you need depends mainly on the climate you live in. Also, your fuel savings from insulation will depend upon the climate, the type and size of your house, the amount of insulation already in your house, and your fuel use patterns and family size. If you buy too much insulation, it will cost you more than what you'll save on fuel. To get the marked R-value, it is essential that this insulation be installed properly.
