National HERS Index Standard approved by standards insititute, ANSI
Earlier this month, RESNET announced that the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) approved the use ANSI/RESNET 301-2014. The standard - Standard for the Calculation and Labeling of the Energy Performance of Low-rise Residential Buildings Using the HERS Index - is understood to be the first national standard that governs home energy ratings for new and existing homes. The approval by ANSI continues the trend towards improved and greater efficiency within the residential market.
According to an announcement from RESNET, more than 218,000 homes were labeled with the HERS Index score, representing about 50% of all new home sales across the nation. This complements the move by the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) who incorporated the Index as a code compliance option within the 2015 building code.
The standard covers:
- new and existing home energy performance
- procedures for calculating ratings
- estimating energy savings
- labeling the energy performance of homes
