Profile: Irish film studio improves acoustics using spray foam insulation
Formerly used as an Ulster Weavers bleachworks factory, the 32-acre Linen Mill Film and Television Studios in Northern Ireland had Icynene Classic spray foam insulation installed for acoustic and condensation purposes.
The Linen Mill Film and Television Studios is the filming location for the second and third seasons of the popular HBO series, Game of Thrones. Facilities include a preview theatre, make-up and wardrobe space, pastures and stables as well as storage space for props. The opportunity to convert the space into film and television studios was presented to owners Ulster Weavers in May 2008.
Converting the space into usable sound stages required the owners to seek modern construction materials, such as spray foam insulation. Chilly autumnal and winter weather made thermal comfort a top priority. The studio owners wanted to find ways to prevent condensation from occurring on the underside of the roof during filming, while also finding a solution that could provide thermal comfort. Icynene Classic spray foam insulation was considered the best insulation choice for providing both acoustic and condensation protection.
The local licensed spray foam contractor was consulted and took to spraying the large facility within two days to help prevent an delays in film production. As a result of using Icynene spray foam insulation, the studio owners were able to make use of otherwise disused farm buildings thereby increasing the space available to rent. The spray foam and its sound dampening qualities helped ensure that these new studio spaces were brought up to the high standard expected for film production.
