Work with a licensed Icynene spray foam contractor

Recently we spoke about the industry discussions regarding spray foam and its proper application and what to look for in a spray foam contractor. Continuing that discussion, we ask is spray foam insulation a magic bullet?

Is Spray Foam A Magic Bullet?
The question has been asked as to whether spray foam is a magic bullet? There is really no other insulation material can come close to the benefits and performance that spray foam insulation offers home and building owners. It is comprehensive training programs like this that rebuts the claims amongst individuals within the building industry that spray foam insulation is not a magic bullet or is not any better than the more traditional materials available. Spray foam insulation does perform optimally, and over the long-term, when installed correctly by a licensed contractor who has completed the right training and is backed by their manufacturer.

While the old adage of caveat emptor may still hold true for many products, homeowners as well as those within the building industry can protect themselves from unqualified contractors by using resources such as the SPFA’s Membership Directory or the Insulation Contractors Association of America contractor directory to hire a licensed contractor that is backed by their manufacturer.

A few tips to consider when seeking a spray foam contractor:

  1. Ensure the contractor has the appropriate training in spray foam installation, and can provide you with evidence that they have done so (i.e. licenses). Call the manufacturer to ensure the contractor really is affiliated with them and has been qualified by them.
  2. Ask the contractor about their experience, training and what you can expect during the installation process.
  3. Have the contractor provide you with recommendations as to which spray foam product is most appropriate for your project and which areas are best to apply the insulation within the project.
  4. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and seek clarification when you don’t understand something about spray foam insulation, its installation and its performance. A qualified spray foam professional should be able to answer any questions you may have.
