Understanding how an Energy Rating works

You are here

Most homeowners do not understand how energy efficient - or inefficient - their home really is. One of the best ways to find out how energy efficient a home is to complete a home energy rating. The team at RESNET have developed the Home Energy Rating System (HERS®). A nationally-recognized system to assess a home's energy performance, it is completed by a certified HERS® Rater who will carry out a series of testing including a blower door test, duct leakage test as well as use infrared cameras to determine:

  • Where air leaks are within the building envelope
  • How much air is escaping from the building envelope due to the air leaks
  • How much air is escaping from HVAC ductwork and
  • How effective the insulation is

Icynene recommends having a HERS® Rater assess how energy efficient your client's home and considering using an energy efficient material such as Icynene spray foam insulation to improve their HERS® score. The more energy efficient the home, the better the HERS® score.  RESNET has developed a simple and explanatory infographic which your clients can read to learn more about the value in HERS® Ratings and having a HERS® Rater assess their home.
