New MLS Energy Efficiency Scores

The energy efficiency of a home has long been on the minds of people looking to buy or sell their house. However, now there’s a way to measure that energy efficiency and share it with potential buyers at a glance, when you’re selling your home.

The MLS (Multiple Listings Service) has begun to make a special Home Energy Rating Score (HERS) available on home listings in nine states in the U.S. That means that potential buyers can see how energy efficient a home is before ever stepping foot inside.  A higher rating will mean the cost to run the home is higher. The states including a HERS score in their MLS listings are as follows:

  1. Colorado
  2. Florida
  3. Illinois
  4. Maine
  5. Minnesota
  6. Nebraska
  7. New Hampshire
  8. Vermont
  9. Washington

How can you, as the homeowner looking to sell, help to improve that score? One way is to upgrade your home insulation to spray foam insulation like Icynene. When foam insulation is installed in appropriate areas throughout the house, it can help to reduce air leaks, improve energy efficiency and help create a more comfortable environment. Air leaks can cause unwanted drafts in homes, which can lead to a higher use of heating and cooling systems to maintain a comfortable interior temperature. This can then lead to higher heating and cooling bills, all of which will raise a HERS score on a home.

Talk to a licensed Icynene spray foam insulation contractor in your area, to find out more about your home’s current HERS score, and how you can improve your rating.
