R-Value: The Full Story

Whether you’re in the process of building a new home, or looking at renovating your current home, the opportunity to choose insulation inevitably brings up conversations about R-value. Typically, you’ll hear that higher R-value means better insulation, but there’s more to it than that.

To begin with, if you’re not completely sure what R-value is, it’s an insulating material’s resistance to heat flow. As mentioned before, you will generally hear that the higher the R-value, the better the insulating material.

There are two key factors that often aren’t taken into consideration, however. The first is that when insulation is improperly installed, it can lose its R-value performance. The second is the conditioned air lost via air leakage, which happens through tiny gaps and cracks that are often left when traditional insulation is installed.

In contrast, Icynene spray foam insulation R value is ideal, but together with the air sealing that is achieved, wherever it is applied, Icynene becomes the clear winner, in terms of performance and savings for your home. Icynene’s ability to expand into tiny gaps in your home, where traditional insulation might not fit, help to effectively create an air barrier that will prevent the air loss that often reduces an insulation’s R-value.
